If it’s good enough for a bridge…

Look at them Euro-peons. Make bridges out of composites all over the place. Pretty darn cool. Here’s a couple of images of one recently completed in Spain.

Pretty slick stuff.

We like seeing carbon fiber and composite materials showing up in all sorts of cool places like the front fenders of the new Corvette, lots of places on those fancy (again Euro-peon) Lamborghini and Ferrari’s over the last few years.

The swiss are getting into the act too with this nifty bridge for skiers and hikers.

And those wacky Danes have been using this composite bridge since 1997.

Do you know any really cool applications for carbon fiber? Leave me a note in the comments!
Cheers,
Chuck aka Pimpy

The Boeing 7E7 dreamliner (officially designated as the 787 dreamliner) passenger airplane makes extensive use of carbon fiber composites, using 20 percent less fuel than any other airplane of its size, enabling direct global travel without the requirement of “hub” airports.

Okay, so I cut and pasted this from Boeing’s website. Still pretty cool though…

They make those hi-tech prosthetic limbs out of carbon fiber, don’t they? Like mtb’ers use who’ve lost a limb? Can’t think of many applications much cooler than that. That guy Aaron Ralston even has various action-figure attachments for his (ice axe, hold onto handlebars, etc.)

    rock on, chuck.

Here are a few links to carbon fiber chairs that I found interesting.
