DGN RIP
Thursday, November 30th, 2006Today is the last day of Deux Grox Nez, which the owner/founder claims is “the most popular restaurant in Reno for people who don’t live here”. Check out this picture of the the entrance:
And the very eclectic interior:
A sad day my estimation. Started about 21 years ago by Tim Healion who is un of the deux “gros nez”. Gros means big, nez means nose. It’s full of great cycling memorabilia and also the home of the Tour de Nez, a really fun and excellent stage race that gets bigger and better every year.
The opening paragraph of the Deux Gros Nez website says:
Welcome to Deux Gros Nez, the ultimate cycling cafe and unauthorized, non-government experiment into the swirling, whirling collective unconscious. We opened our doors as Nevada’s first full-blown coffee house in 1985 when most people in Reno had no idea what espresso was, let alone how to spell it. Here we are, a couple decades later, still dishing up food we like to people we like and having a heckuva good time doing it. Join us for a great meal, homemade pie, fresh juice, cold beer or our annual anniversary celebration and bike race.
It’s been a regular stop of mine every time I’m anywhere near Reno: every trip to Moab, Fruita and Burning Man for example.
It’ll be sad to see it go. The building was sold, and Tim decided that he wanted to move on and focus his energy on the Tour de Nez. Anyway, if you’re anywhere near Reno, check it out. All day today.
Gone tomorrow. Here’s the founder, Tim, and his nose.
