HOW NOT TO TALK TO BOB ROLL
Thursday, February 22nd, 2007Okay, so I’m working for the Tour of California this week. Driving one of the Vs. film crews around and providing local road and taqueria knowledge. Very important stuff.
One of the things our film crew does is interview people with Bob Roll before the race. By people I mean people in the race, not people on the street. So each we walk around where the team vans are parked and we try to find the riders we want to interview. Sometimes we have to sit around and wait a bit. Usually there’s a big crowd milling around, especially if it’s the Discovery bus. And if Lance is there, figgitaboutit!!
So this morning we’re waiting for somebody, and a fan walks up to Bob while he’s holding the microphone, talking to the cameraman (with camera) and the producer. The fan asks Bob, “Are you doing commentating for the Tour of California?”. Now usually, Bob answers these very obvious questions graciously, and without any condescension. Well, maybe a little. But I guess this Q was just a little too much. So he answers “No, I’m not commentating the tour, I’m actually selling Arms now, mainly to the Medellin Cartel in Columbia. It pays better than cycling”.
It was a good moment. The stuff that’s talked about off the record generally won’t be repeated here. Maybe. Unless there’s a really good gem.
To be fair I think Bob actually knew this guy and was messing with him. Maybe this guy was messing with Bob. If I get my act together maybe I’ll post more Tour moments, or better yet, suggested questions to ask Bob if you see him.
