And now, a word about our winner

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Our winner is Adam Beguelin from Incline Village Nevada. Congratulations Adam!

Here’s how it all went down:

Yesterday morning our raffle winner Adam was reading the weekly newsletter produced by Passion Trail Bikes in Belmont California, and in it was a mention of our little raffle (Passion is a big supporter of the stewardship and graciously agreed to write about the raffle in the newsletter–thanks Patty and Charles!). Anyway, Adam has been thinking about getting a new mountain bike lately so he can continue to enjoy his jaunts around Incline (particularly the Flume Trail). And he figured that even if he didn’t win, he’d be helping out a good cause. Well, Adam’s $100 was very well spent, because he held ticket number 691, the winner.

When Adam called me this morning after I informed him of his win via email, I’d asked him if he had ever ridden Downieville. He said, no, he’d only done trail work there, sometime last fall. WOW! That’s pretty cool. I contacted Nica at the Stewardship and sure enough she remembered him and she also had a picture of him, evidence from that trail day.

So people, there you have it, a brief report about our winner.

Once again, congratulations Adam!

*Of our raffle to win a fully decked out Ibis Mojo, with all the proceeds going to the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship.

But we can’t tell you who it is. Not yet anyway.

The winner bought 20 tickets yesterday morning, and we are waiting to hear back.

Most Important, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

THE RAFFLE BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 3975 Tickets were sold
  • You guys raised $19,875 for the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship
  • Did I say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU?
  • 1 person bought $250 worth of tickets
  • 3 People bought $200 worth of tickets
  • 17 People (including our winner) bought $100 worth of tickets
  • 81 of you wonderful people bought $50 worth of tickets

And so on…

Again, thank you for your entries everyone, you all did a good thing.

Here’s how we picked our winner:

Each $5 entry was assigned a unique number. This included entries from those of you who visited us at Sea Otter, people who mailed in money to us, and the vast majority of you who donated online. We downloaded all the data from the secure credit card shopping cart interface thingie (I’m trying not to get too Tech-Nicol here). We added the Sea Otter, mail in and Credit Card entries on one big spreadsheet. If you paid us $50, you got ten individual ticket numbers, due to some fancy spreadsheet wizardry. Ok, not really that fancy, but it worked.

At the end of the day, 3975 individual tickets were purchased. We then went over to random.org and entered a string of numbers from 1-3975 in their ‘List Randomizer’.

Here’s what the top part of the results looked like:

As you can see, ticket # 691 was our winner. The winner held tickets 678-697.

#2389, I know who you are but your identity will remain a secret.

More soon, but here is an example of what you all are helping to make happen.

RAFFLE UPDATE

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Hello there people around the world waiting for an up date on our nice little Mojo raffle results.

I’d wanted to pick the winner tonight, but extracting the data from our secure credit card server tonight proved harder than we’d anticipated. We did a trial run earlier in the day with no problems at all. Maybe they’re down for maintenance or who knows what?

We shall start again first thing in the morning and let you know who the raffle winner is. Sorry for the delay. Here’s a parting shot, thank you all for your donations!

FINAL RAFFLE PUSH

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

The big push to raise some dough for the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship up in Downieville is over on Monday April 27th.

It only costs $5.00 to make a difference.

For those of you who don’t know about the SBTS, they build and maintain trails in the Downieville and Sierra Buttes area, which is a wonderful riding area up in the Sierra about an hour from Tahoe. Here’s a nice shot of the area.

Since inception 6 years ago, volunteers have donated 22,000 hours of labor to the Stewardship. That’s what you call leverage. Each dollar donated goes a long way toward keeping the trails in tip top shape.

Each year they organize a number of events. The biggie is the Downieville Classic, the biggest yearly fundraiser for the Stewardship.

They also organize a nearly monthly trail day. Volunteers build trail on Saturday and go for a ride on Sunday. Efforts like this:

There are also a series of “Epics”, big days on the bike up around the area. Here’s a group taking a lunch break on an Epic:

That’s a whole lot of good positive energy happening up there in the Sierra. The group also reaches out to the local schools and communities, involving them and bringing them into the process. Very inclusive behavior.

Hopefully you’ve kicked down a bit of moolah to benefit this very good organization.
If not, there’s still time. Click this logo, it’ll take you to the donate page. Thanks in advance, and thank all of you volunteers for the SBTS!
