MORE DOMINANCE
Our accomplished endurance racer Evan Plews notched yet another victory on his Tranny last week in the Breck Epic stage race. You can read about the race here, but the important stats are 6 days, 240 miles, 37,000 feet of climbing!! I guess that makes it hard.
Evan won EVERY STAGE in the Solo Single Speed category. He finished 1 hour 13 minutes and 20 seconds over SS hero Dejay Birtch (Niner).
Here’s the before picture:

I asked Evan a couple questions after the race:
Q: What wheel size did you use?
A: 26″ both wheels.
(I asked him this because he ran a rigid front fork and a 29″ front wheel when he won the Sea Otter Pro Single Speed category back in April).
Q: What the heck is in that frame bag?
A: The old school frame bag has the normal items: pump, CO2, tube, patch kit, multitool, quick links, car key, and a couple gels all accessible on the fly!
Q: What was the margin of victory:
A: 1 hour 13 minutes and 20 seconds
Q: What was your worst moment?
A: Breaking my pedal off 5 miles into stage three and having 7 miles to reach the tech zone.
Q: What was your best moment?…
A: Catching the SS leaders at the bottom of the Colorado Trail after crossing the Continental Divide twice in rainy, 40 degree conditions–later the SAME day!
Q: Riding a single speed at high elevation Summit County singletracks, how much did you have to walk?
A: I would guess that I was off the bike 15-30 minutes per day average.
Anyway, congrats to Evan, nice work with the Tranny. Here he is on the podium at the end (he’s the guy on top).
Here’s his exact setup for this race:
Frame: Ibis Tranny Nude Large
Fork: Manitou R7 MRD 100, extra squish for the Breck knarl.
Wheels: 26″ Notubes Race Rims laced to XTR front hub and DT Swiss 240SS rear hub with Marwi Ti spokes, a little more suspension.
Tires: Continental Race King Protection 26 x 2.2, a must for Breck rocks and trail garbage!
Brakes: Hayes Stroker Gram with XTR Centerloc rotors 160mm front, 140mm rear.
Bars: Answer Protaper Carbon
Stem: Rotor SL 120mm
Grips: Ergon GX1
Saddle: SDG Formula FX
Seatpost: SDG IBeam Setback
Crankset: Rotor 3D with 34 tooth SS Q-Ring
Chain: Sram PC89R
Cog: Boone Ti 17 tooth… So low it had to be borrowed!
Pedals: Speedplay Frog Ti
Again, nice work Evan and congratulations!

Wow – impressive. Cool story. Man, one of those old school frame bags could be handy….

Why turn your back on one of the coolest inventions of all time, the transmission. Even cavemen used and appreciated leverage. What’s with the whole single-speed thing… anti technology… retro…? If that was true, then why disc brakes, Ti and carbon everywhere. If you want to be macho, take off the brakes, no freewheel, wood or steel rims, steel frame, hairnet, wool jersey… now you’re cool and macho…
