Did anybody seen the moon rise last night? Beauty. It didn’t look anything like this:

The Great Handcar Regatta 2011

September 26th, 2011

The last three years I’ve missed this excellent event due to Interbike. This year I missed Interbike and finally got to attend The Great West End Handcar Regatta, held yesterday on the west side of Santa Rosa. And for that, I have no regrets at all.

The flyer looked like this:

One of the main attractions was handcar races, where rail contraptions faced off against each other for drag races down two sets of parallel railroad tracks.

Here’s an actual handcar, but they were somewhat rare.

Here’s another handcar, for four people, a little more evolved, and a lot faster than it looks.

And here’s another very fast entry, #666.

And here’s a great little clip of #666 and that 4 person handcar, duking it out in one of the better races of the day.

Not to be confused with this race, the slowest of the day, featuring the inch worm rail car.

And here are a few random crowd and other shots.

Not all of the attractions were on the tracks, either. There was this electric wheelbarrow, a ‘chick magnet’ if there ever was one:

And here’s proof of that in a little video

There was a band playing on mobile contraption called the back porch. You ‘Burners’ will recognize this from the last two years at BRC.

Then there was this guy, who wasn’t a part of the Regatta, but set up in a parking lot next door, he was great! Sorry for the crap video, he was kind of far away.

And there was the Hub Bub Club marching band.

They had a lot of stylish people in the band, including the accordion player:

And there was an infirmary.

And nurses to take care of you.

With tools of the trade, including tinctures and implements of ass destruction.

With no shortage of patients, who seem to be making miraculous recoveries.

But despite all the monumental effort by everyone, this guy impressed, with very little effort.

Happy Fourth of July

Even though it’s only the first. Better to be a little ahead.
